Rabbit and separate rail tickets: how to pay for transport in Bangkok

Learn where to buy and use Rabbit on Bangkok’s BTS. Check card costs, top-ups and why MRT or Airport Rail Link journeys need separate planning.

Rabbit is useful for BTS travel and certain other participating services, but it should not be described as one card for every train, boat and bus in Bangkok. A first visitor can also use single-journey tickets where they make sense.

The quick answer

A BTS day ticket, Rabbit stored value and a sightseeing or river-boat day pass solve different problems. Keep a small amount of local cash for services or machines that do not accept your preferred payment method.

Where to buy and add credit

Buy through official ticket offices and check the required identification for a new card. The BTS page lists a card issuance fee of THB 120 with stored value added separately. Decide whether enough BTS journeys justify the extra card purchase.

How to use it

Use the ticket or card at the entry gate and retain it for the exit. Check the current fare for the destination. A transfer to a differently operated line may require a separate payment even when stations are physically connected.

Fares, card costs and what they mean

BTS fares vary with the trip and ticket product. The Rabbit purchase page lists a minimum stored-value top-up of THB 100; this is credit, not a fixed day fare. Compare actual journeys rather than converting the top-up amount into an unlimited pass.

Choose by your actual journeys

Your planWhat to compare
One or two journeysThe ordinary fare against any card purchase cost.
Several days of travelStored value, eligible transfers and the relevant time-based pass.
Airport or regional outingIts own fare and any explicit exclusions from a city product.

Avoid buying the same benefit twice

List your BTS rides separately from MRT and Airport Rail Link journeys before deciding how much to load on Rabbit. Read the line’s accepted payment method at the station. Do not assume a card that opens one system’s gate will work across every Bangkok rail network.
