When is the MTR Tourist Day Pass worth comparing?
MTR lists HK$75 for adults and HK$35 for children. Add up the eligible rail fares for your planned day before comparing them with that price. Keep airport travel and other excluded journeys outside the total.
If your day is mostly a neighbourhood walk and a meal, paying as you go may be simpler. For several longer rail journeys, check the day pass conditions. An Octopus balance and a pass can coexist in your trip budget without covering the same things.

The official Sold Tourist Octopus page lists a HK$39 card price with no stored value unless the seller’s package adds it. For example, a HK$139 package consisting of a HK$39 card and HK$100 credit provides HK$100 to spend, not HK$139. Check the exact package and card type; these terms were checked on 14 September 2026.
Standard On-Loan Octopus uses a HK$50 refundable deposit plus stored value. The card issuer lists an HK$11 handling fee when it is returned within 90 days. A Sold card’s purchase price is non-refundable, although remaining stored value can be refunded under its conditions.
Which Octopus costs belong in your holiday budget?
A deposit, a non-refundable card purchase and the fares spent from your balance are three different things. Compare the amount you expect to recover at departure, not only the cash needed at the counter. Leave time to use the appropriate refund channel before your flight.
Our example for a short stay: start with enough credit for the arrival journey and first outings, then reload after seeing your actual use. Keep the Airport Express, an ordinary MTR journey and a sightseeing cable-car ticket as separate purchases unless your exact package explicitly includes them.
