Istanbulkart is the rechargeable fare card used for everyday public transport. It is a different product from a sightseeing pass and from a tourist transport bundle. Buying the plastic card does not put unlimited travel on it: you also need usable travel credit.
A QR transport package may cover selected tourist routes only. Compare its actual line list with your airport journey, planned ferries and Asian-side trips. A package labelled “Istanbul” is not automatically a replacement for Istanbulkart across the whole network.
Where to buy and add credit

Use an official vending machine, authorised sales point or card centre. Choose an ordinary full-fare option unless you can prove eligibility for a concession. Keep the purchase receipt and add credit before reaching a busy platform gate.
How to use it
Hold the card still against the reader until the successful validation appears, then pass through. Watch the balance after each journey. Transfers and distance-based services may have their own rules; do not assume every second ride is free or that several people sharing one card get the same benefits.
Fares, card costs and what they mean
The official fare tables distinguish the card cost, travel fares and other charges. We link those tables instead of combining them into a misleading “one trip costs…” figure. The route, visitor category and type of service determine what to budget.

Choose by your actual journeys

| Your plan | What to compare |
|---|---|
| One or two journeys | The ordinary fare against any card purchase cost. |
| Several days of travel | Stored value, eligible transfers and the relevant time-based pass. |
| Airport or regional outing | Its own fare and any explicit exclusions from a city product. |
Avoid buying the same benefit twice
For a three-day stay, list your likely tram rides, ferry crossings and airport connection before choosing a package. Separate the price of the plastic Istanbulkart from loaded credit. If a QR bundle omits a journey on your list, budget that fare separately instead of counting it as included.
