Your first day in Istanbul: Sultanahmet at your pace
Two landmark visits, a generous lunch break and time to explore the historic square. A walkable first day without racing between bookings.
Our suggested time allowances include breaks and buffers; they are not live opening hours or guaranteed journey times. Map pins identify the area, not your ticket’s meeting point.
DAY 1
A day on the historic peninsula
Start with whichever ticket time you can secure. Keep Topkapi for a separate day if you want to explore it properly. Allow extra time around Friday prayers.
Loads OpenStreetMap. The marker shows the first stop; use directions for the full route.
Route order is a planning suggestion. Check current ferry services, road access and travel times before setting off.
STOP 1 · Morning · allow 60–90 min
Hagia Sophia
Begin with the visitor route. Dress for a religious site and keep your confirmation handy. Check whether your booking requires a voucher exchange before joining the entrance queue.
Getting there: Start near Sultanahmet tram stop; allow 10–15 min to orient yourself.
Finish outdoors with the obelisks and the views towards the Blue Mosque. If you enter the mosque, follow its current visitor and prayer arrangements. Keep the remainder of the afternoon flexible.
Getting there: Walk back towards the Hippodrome; leave at least an hour for lunch first.
