A Leonardo Express airport train at a platform in Rome

Compare Rome airport transfers by arrival airport, hotel location and luggage. Understand Leonardo Express, Ciampino buses and the final city connection.

The quick answer

Choose by airport code first, then hotel location. FCO’s Leonardo Express runs to Termini; CIA needs a different connection. Keep airport tickets separate from your urban transport budget.

First check your airport code: FCO or CIA

Rome has two different airport arrival problems. Fiumicino (FCO) has a station in the airport; Ciampino (CIA) uses road connections for the first leg. A ticket described simply as “Rome airport transfer” needs a closer look before you buy.

Write down three things: the airport code on your flight, your expected time outside arrivals and your hotel’s nearest practical stop. Plan from that time, not the scheduled landing time. Immigration, baggage reclaim and finding the station all happen before your city journey starts.

Fiumicino to Termini: Leonardo Express

Trenitalia lists the nonstop Leonardo Express at €14 for the 32-minute journey between Fiumicino Airport and Roma Termini, with scheduled departures every 15 minutes. These details were checked on 14 September 2026; use the timetable for your date when choosing a departure.

Termini is the arrival station, not your hotel doorstep. If you still need a metro journey or a taxi, include that time and cost. Compare a different airport connection when its city stop is closer to your accommodation, instead of automatically routing every trip through Termini.

Buy a ticket for the train you intend to use and follow its validation or digital-ticket instructions. The airport rail ticket and an urban contactless journey are separate purchases; do not assume a city card tap covers this train.

Ciampino: choose the bus connection before the city ticket

Rome Airports lists daily bus links from Ciampino Airport to Ciampino railway station or Anagnina, as well as airport coach operators. These are different routes with different onward journeys. Read the destination on the service you choose.

Compare a direct city coach with a bus-plus-rail route using your actual hotel location. With a large suitcase, a route with fewer changes can be easier even when the headline fare is higher. Check the operator’s boarding point and luggage conditions before paying.

A transfer labelled “Ciampino station” still involves onward travel. Save both legs, including a return option, so you do not arrive at an interchange with only the first ticket planned.

Does a Rome day pass include the airport?

Trenitalia explicitly excludes integrated Metrebus tickets from Leonardo Express. Keep that airport leg outside your BIT or Roma 24/48/72-hour city-transport calculation.

Once in the city, compare walking and local transport from the arrival point. Do not buy an attraction pass solely to solve an airport journey unless its current inclusion list names that exact service.

A simple arrival plan for a hotel near Termini

For an FCO arrival and a hotel within a manageable walk of Termini, start by comparing Leonardo Express with a direct coach. Add the station-to-hotel walk and check check-in arrangements before picking the cheaper total.

For a CIA arrival, start again with the Ciampino services. Do not reuse an FCO ticket or assume the journey time will match. If either flight arrives late, agree a backup with your accommodation before leaving home.

  • Keep flight, airport and terminal details together.
  • Compare prices for the whole party, including luggage and onward rides.
  • Avoid a non-changeable museum slot immediately after arrival.
  • Recheck the return airport code before your departure day.
