Which pass is worth it? Three worked examples
These are our calculations for separate full-fare BIT charges, not a count of every vehicle boarded. A valid transfer may not require another BIT. Museum entry and airport transfers are excluded.

A 72-hour pass is not three calendar days
Example: first validation on Friday at 10:00 gives a ROMA72H validity window until Monday at 10:00. A Monday afternoon journey needs another valid ticket. Buy the pass for the period you will actually travel, not simply the number of hotel nights.
How Tap & Go works in Rome
ATAC’s contactless system prices an ordinary first journey as a €1.50 BIT. Use the same payment medium throughout: a physical card, a phone and a watch are separate media even when linked to the same bank account.
ATAC’s Italian FAQ says the sixth BIT purchase in 24 hours triggers the €8.50 Roma 24-hour best fare. Four separate BITs cost €6 and five cost €7.50, so an upfront day ticket is not automatically cheaper for a light itinerary. These comparisons assume each journey requires a separate BIT.

Present one accepted contactless card or device to the reader and wait for the successful validation. Tap again when changing transport. Keep using that exact medium: the plastic card, its phone-wallet version and its watch version are treated separately even if linked to the same bank account.
Each companion needs their own valid ticket or payment medium. Keep the medium you used available for inspection. If the gate stays closed or validation fails, resolve it before travelling; a pending bank notification by itself is not proof that a ride was validated.
Will Tap & Go automatically choose a 48- or 72-hour pass?
Do not assume so. ATAC describes an automatic ROMA24H best fare after enough BIT charges within 24 hours. Buy a ROMA48H or ROMA72H separately if that is the product you want. Keep the same card or device for contactless travel; a phone wallet and its underlying plastic card are separate payment media.
Does a Rome transport pass include the airport?
Do not use a city pass as a Leonardo Express ticket: that Fiumicino train has its own fare. Ciampino trips using urban bus 520 or 720 and the metro need to be distinguished from separately priced airport coaches. Check the exact operator and route before buying.

Plan one valid payment medium or ticket per traveller. Do not assume that tapping the same card repeatedly creates tickets for everyone in your group.
Can I switch between my bank card and phone on Rome transport?
Use the same physical card or device throughout. ATAC treats the card and its wallet versions separately for Tap & Go transfers and best-fare calculation.
Is a 72-hour Rome transport pass worth it?
It depends on your journeys. Six separate BIT charges over a three-day stay total EUR 9, below the EUR 22 ROMA72H. Heavy use can favour the pass; compare journeys within the same 72-hour window.
Does the Rome transport pass include the Colosseum or Vatican Museums?
No. ROMA24H, ROMA48H and ROMA72H are public transport tickets. Attraction admission is separate.
When does a Rome 48-hour or 72-hour ticket start?
Its validity starts at the first validation, not at midnight or simply when you buy it. Check that your last planned journey fits inside that window.
Where can I buy transport tickets or a card in Rome?
Use ATAC machines, authorised sales points or supported ticket apps. If paying directly with a bank card, look for the Tap & Go symbol. Check which service you are boarding before assuming an urban ticket also covers an airport journey.
How do I validate my Rome transport fare?
Validate each required journey and use the same card or device consistently with Tap & Go. Keep a paper ticket until the end of the trip. A BIT allows travel within its time rules, but metro entry has additional restrictions; it is not unlimited repeated metro entry.
What should I check before choosing BIT tickets and Tap & Go?
A Roma 24/48/72-hour transport ticket and Roma Pass sightseeing card are different purchases. Work out the transit journeys first, then consider museums separately so you do not pay twice for the same transport benefit.
