Topkapi or Dolmabahçe: Which Palace Should You Visit?

Choose between Topkapi and Dolmabahçe Palace: compare interiors, Harem tickets, closed days, visit time and how each fits your Istanbul itinerary.

The twin towers at the entrance to Topkapi Palace

Both palaces tell part of Istanbul’s story, but they make very different visits. Choose Topkapi for courtyards, collections and the older Ottoman court; choose Dolmabahçe for a richly decorated waterfront residence. If time is short, start with the experience you want rather than trying to fit both into one rushed day.

The quick answer

Topkapi fits an Old City day. Dolmabahçe fits a Bosphorus-side day. Check Harem access on the exact ticket, and remember: Topkapi closes on Tuesdays; Dolmabahçe closes on Mondays.

Which one matches your interests?

At Topkapi, the changing courtyards and separate buildings are part of the visit. Choose it if you want to spend time on collections and the history of the Ottoman court. Include the Harem deliberately if its rooms and decoration are a priority.

Dolmabahçe is the stronger starting point if you are drawn to grand ceremonial interiors. The palace was used from 1856 and combines Ottoman traditions with European decorative styles. Its setting also makes it easy to build the rest of your day around the waterfront.

Ticket prices and Harem: compare like for like

On 14 September 2026, National Palaces listed the foreign-visitor Topkapi + Harem + Hagia Irene combination at TRY 2,750, and Dolmabahçe Selamlık + Harem + Painting Museum at TRY 2,000. These are the official packages checked on that date, not live prices for every reseller or visitor category.

A reseller’s entry option may cover different areas or add a host, audio guide or live tour. Compare the named rooms and services before comparing the headline price. “Harem” refers to different spaces in the two palaces; a ticket for one does not admit you to the other.

Getting there and choosing the day

For Topkapi, plan your final walk through the Old City from the Sultanahmet or Gülhane area. For Dolmabahçe, compare the walk from Kabataş with your hotel route. T1 serves the Old City and Kabataş, so it can help connect the two areas.

Avoid putting Dolmabahçe on Monday or Topkapi on Tuesday. Both official pages list ticket-office hours of 09:00–17:00; these are ticket-office times, not a promise that arriving just before 17:00 leaves enough time to visit. Recheck holiday notices and your booked entry time.

Can you visit both palaces in one day?

It is possible to plan both on a day when both are open, but it makes a full museum day. Add travel, security and a lunch break before committing to two timed entries. Our preference for a first visit is one palace plus nearby outdoor stops.

If travelling with children or someone who needs regular rests, select the rooms that matter most and keep the rest flexible. Neither an audio guide nor a live tour guarantees a shorter visit; read the route and duration of the actual option. For step-free access, confirm the rooms and entrances you need with the operator.

BEFORE YOU GO

Topkapi or Dolmabahçe?: common questions

Is Topkapi or Dolmabahçe better for a first visit?

Choose Topkapi for the older Ottoman court, courtyards and collections, or Dolmabahçe for grand waterfront interiors. Match the palace to your interests and the area you are already exploring.

Can I visit Topkapi and Dolmabahçe on Monday?

Dolmabahçe is normally closed on Mondays. Topkapi’s weekly closure is Tuesday. Check special holiday arrangements before choosing a date.

Does a Topkapi ticket include Dolmabahçe?

Do not assume so. They are separate attractions. Buy a package that explicitly lists both if you want combined admission.

Do both palaces have a Harem?

Yes, but these are different palace spaces. Check Harem access separately on each selected ticket.

How much time should I allow for each palace?

As a planning suggestion, allow around 3–4 hours for Topkapi and 2–3 hours for Dolmabahçe, plus queues and travel. Guided routes and personal pace can change those estimates.
